Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) lets you connect to a Windows VPS with a full graphical desktop — just like using the server physically. Hordanso Windows Server VPS plans support RDP access.
Connecting via RDP on Windows
- On your Windows computer, press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type mstsc and press Enter. The Remote Desktop Connection window will open.
- In the Computer field, enter your VPS IP address.
- If your server uses a non-standard RDP port, append it after a colon: IP:PORT (e.g., 192.168.1.100:3389).
- Click Connect.
- Enter your Username and Password from your welcome email.
- Click OK.
- A security certificate warning may appear. Click Yes to proceed.
- You will now see the Windows desktop of your VPS.
Connecting via RDP on Mac
- Download Microsoft Remote Desktop from the Mac App Store (free).
- Open the app and click the + icon to add a new PC.
- In the PC Name field, enter your VPS IP address (and port if needed, e.g., 192.168.1.100:3389).
- Click Add.
- Double-click the new PC icon to connect.
- Enter your credentials when prompted.
RDP Connection Troubleshooting
- Cannot connect: Check that your VPS IP is correct and that the RDP port (default 3389) is not blocked by your router or firewall
- Credentials rejected: Make sure you are using the exact username and password from your welcome email
- Slow connection: Try reducing the display quality in Remote Desktop settings (Options > Display > Colors)
- Connection keeps dropping: Check your internet connection. A stable wired connection is better than Wi-Fi for RDP sessions
Note: By default, RDP uses port 3389. For security, Hordanso-configured Windows servers may use a different port. Check your welcome email for the correct port number.
