Shared hosting means your website shares server resources with other customers. Each account has limits to ensure fair performance for everyone. Understanding these limits helps you plan for growth.
What Resources Are Limited?
Storage (Disk Space)
- Starter: 3 GB SSD (monthly) or 6 GB SSD (annual plan)
- Pro: 15 GB SSD (monthly) or 40 GB SSD (annual)
- Developer: 40 GB SSD (monthly) or 80 GB SSD (annual)
Storage includes your website files, databases, and email. To check usage, log in to cPanel — the disk usage summary is on the main dashboard.
Bandwidth
- Starter: 30 GB/month
- Pro and Developer: Unmetered (subject to fair use policy)
Bandwidth is the data transferred when visitors load your site. High-traffic sites with large images or videos use more bandwidth.
CPU and RAM
On shared hosting, CPU and RAM are shared dynamically. There is no fixed limit shown, but sustained high CPU usage will trigger throttling to protect other customers. You can check your resource usage in cPanel > Metrics > Resource Usage (CloudLinux).
Signs You Are Hitting Resource Limits
- Your website loads very slowly during peak hours
- You see a 508 Resource Limit Reached error
- Your cPanel Resource Usage graph shows consistent red/warning zones
- Cron jobs or scripts fail with timeout errors
What to Do When You Hit Limits
Short-Term Fixes
- Optimise images — compress them before uploading (use tools like TinyPNG)
- Enable caching — use a WordPress caching plugin like WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache
- Enable CDN — Hordanso includes a free CDN to serve static files faster
- Reduce plugins — disable unused WordPress plugins that consume CPU on every page load
Long-Term Fix — Upgrade
If you consistently hit limits, it is time to upgrade. Your options:
- Upgrade hosting plan — move from Starter to Pro or Developer
- Move to VPS — get dedicated CPU and RAM that is not shared with anyone
